Selecting An Ironing Board - What To Look For

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

An ironing board is, without doubt, a mundane item of household equipment to which the majority of people give very little thought. However, it is an essential item for any household and, if you choose the wrong one, then you might end up with badly pressed garments, take more time than you need to when ironing and even put unnecessary strain on your back.

Most people today use steam irons - or even steam generator irons, which are becoming ever more popular. In this case you definitely want to get an ironing board which has a mesh construction. This allows the steam to pass through the fabric of the garment being ironed, through the cover of the ironing board and through the top of the board itself. It helps to prevent the ironing board cover becoming soggy due to condensation after a few garments have been ironed.

The cover of the ironing board should present a smooth surface to facilitate ironing. It should be secure and not prone to slipping. An elasticated cover, possibly with one or two cross-ties at the centre, is generally a good design which won’t move about as you iron. A metalised cover will reflect some of the heat and this will help to smooth the underside of the garment whilst the top surface is being ironed.

The size and shape of the board that you select will depend, to a large extent, on the type of things that you usually iron. Whilst a smaller board may be easier to store and work around, it will normally mean that the garment being ironed needs to be repositioned more frequently. Ironing the shoulders of shirts and blouses will be easier if there is a marked taper on the “pointy” end of the board.

Scissor action legs are pretty much the norm. It should be possible to adjust the height to a level that suits you and doesn’t cause any back strain. If you like to iron from a seated position then legs which have a curve on them - so that you don’t bang your knees on them - are a good idea. The legs should provide good support. A broad T-piece, or legs that splay to a good width and have a connecting bar, are usually good options.

The support for the iron should be strong enough to support the iron’s weight. For a traditional steam iron a wire frame type of arrangement is generally sufficient. Due to their large base units, steam generator irons can be quite a bit heavier than normal steam irons. A slightly longer board which just uses a heat resistant plate on its surface may be better for this type of iron. Alternatively, the base unit could be placed on the floor - as long as the connecting hose between the base unit and the iron is long enough to allow this.

Ironing is a thankless task at best. Cut it down to size with a Tefal steam generator iron - you’ll be delighted at just how much time you can save.

What To Rememer When Cramming For A Quiz

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

When it comes to studying, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. That includes cramming at the last minute. Even with a narrow time frame, you can eke out a passing grade.

It is essential that you approach any studying, especially last minute studying, from a healthy frame of mind. If you worry too much about the potential outcome of an exam, you will only cause yourself undue stress and make it more difficult to remember what you need to know. Remember, the worst that can happen in you will fail one test.

If you understand that in the grade scheme of things, one test will not wreck your grade point average, you will be in a much better mental state in which to study. Come at it from the perspective that you would already be failing the exam, so anything better than an F could be considered a success.

Once you accept your present state, you can approach the material with a clear head and a calm body.

Keep in mind that many of your classmates may be finding themselves in similar situations. You are all essentially trying to swing as high a grade as possible while putting in a minimal amount of effort.

Learning experts agree that the best way to approach such last minute cram sessions is to break down the subject matter into smaller packets of information. Much study material is already subdivided into chapters or subheadings. Pick out the concepts behind the chapters and parse it out from there.

Take the key points from each chapter or section of your material and master those as best as you can. Ignore miscellany and specifics as much as you can. Go through all test subjects in this way until you have completed it all.

Once you have cycled through all the material, you should have a much better concept of what you are to be tested on. Even if you aren’t an expert as a result of this work, you should at least manage a passing grade.

The Top Eight Strategies For Boosting Productivity

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

The quality of our life is determined by how we spend our time. Approximately 80% of us waste 10-15 hours a week on unnecessary interruptions, procrastination, and clutter. Think about how much additional money you could make if those 10-15 hours were used productively. Or think about how much more fun you could have if you had an additional 10-15 hours off each week. Start with these simple strategies if you are ready to maximize your workweek.

1. Create a time management system that fits with your values, preferences, and lifestyle.

Find a successful time management system that works for you. We each prefer to complete certain tasks and activities in different ways, places, and at different times. By honoring your specific preferences, it will make accomplishing more in less time much easier.

2. Establish visiting hours.

You can reduce unnecessary interruptions while offering people the opportunity to communicate with you in a relaxed setting but establishing and enforcing visiting hours. My recommendation is to keep your office door open during established visiting hours and closed at all other times.

3. Optimize your creativity.

People who are creative need a space and a place to record sudden ideas, inspirations, and thoughts that can be distracting during task mode. Keep a tape recorder, notebook, or file nearby to record both simple and complex ideas. The iPhone and many of the other smart phones offer a voice recorder application that makes it simple to record an idea or thought and then quickly get back to the task at hand.

4. Assign a dollar value to the total time wasted in one day.

How much time do you spend per day: Locating papers? Looking for misplaced items? Duplicating efforts? Being annoyed because you can’t find things? Dealing with interruptions that are unnecessary? Total this time. Next, determine what your time is worth. If you earn $50,000 per year and work an average of 40 hours per week, your time is worth $24 per hour. If you’re wasting 10 hours every week, that is worth $240 to you. Type up a sign to post above your desk that says: “Is what I am doing right now worth $24?” You could also word it like this: “Would I be willing to pay someone $24 to do what I am doing right now?” Just looking at that sign throughout the day will shift what you spend your time doing. You will automatically start spending your more time on productive revenue generating tasks and less time on minutia.

5.Think “worst in, first out.” Or delegate unfavorable tasks.

Procrastination is one of the biggest enemies of a well-managed day. Often, we procrastinate because we do not like the task, do not have the right equipment, or we do not have enough information to make a decision. Handle the worst problems first. Get them done, and then move on to the fun stuff. If you continue to procrastinate, delegate the task or hire someone to complete the task for you.

6. Schedule in your tasks.

Make sure you set up specific time slots every day to return voice mail and e-mail, work on important projects, etc. By organizing your work into batches you will get more done in less time. First, make a list of all tasks that need to get done and separate each task by daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually. Write them down on your calendar in batches. For example, make two “appointments” every day to check and return voicemail and e-mail. Choose one appointment time each week to send out client invoices and so on.

7. Limit distractions.

When important projects need to be completed, close the door, turn off the phone, and place a sign on the door that reads: “Man or woman at work. Please return at *insert your visiting hour*.” Use this valuable time to complete important projects. Make an appointment with yourself each day to work on important projects. Treat the appointment as your would an important appointment with your doctor. If something else comes up during that time, reschedule the appointment with yourself in the same way you would reschedule a doctor’s appointment.

8. Each day, practice saying “NO” at least 10 times.

Often, saving time means saying “no” to other people. If this is difficult for you practice a variety of responses at least 10 times each day. For example, “I would really like to attend, but I cannot make it this time,” or “I am unfortunately too busy to do your project justice to your project at this time but am flattered that you thought of me,” or “no, thank you,” or simply “No.” Just remember you are honoring your own life and goals by saying “no.

How To Break Your Facebook Addiction

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

If you think you are spending too much time on Facebook, then this article will help you to see if you are getting addicted to it.

Look at the games that you play on Facebook. Do you spend a lot of time farming or trying to accumulate points and rewards on more than one? Facebook wants you to keep coming back as often as possible, and having the games designed like the way they do makes it easy to grab your free time, and sometimes even more than that.

These games are also tremendous time wasters. It is not hard to sit down for fifteen minutes, and then all of a sudden four hours have passed by. As you keep getting points and bonuses, and moving up the ranks of your favorite game, your time is disappearing more and more.

Besides playing games online, the amount of time that you spend each day updating your Facebook page can tell you if you have a problem. Checking in once or twice a day is one thing, but doing it all day long can be a little obsessive.

Keeping in touch and maintaining contact can be done once or twice a day, but some people find it ideal to do it before they go to bed. This way they get everybody’s news while not being stuck to the computer all day long.

One more thing. If you are spending all day long glued to your Facebook, and staring at your news feed like it’s the stock ticker, then maybe you need to get outside and experience life in the real world for a while.

What kind of things are you posting on Facebook? People are really not that interested in the little details that fill our days, so keep in mind that the more boring your posts are, the less people will read them. Keep it brief and interesting, and then sign off.

Getting out of the Facebook habit is easy, just go outside and do things that are interesting and enjoyable. Fill your lives up with life and write about those things. People will like them a lot more, and your life will become more interesting and well rounded.

HP IPAQ 211 Keeps Your Day Organized

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Some people are just born with computer skills. They can spend hours in front of the screen without feeling the time passing by. Well, I am not one of them. I have always enjoyed traveling, meeting people personally, talking to them. Of course, these days it is impossible not to use a lot of technology every day, but I tried to do without it as much as I could.

My company decided we all needed to organize our time better. I’m sure a lot of people were slacking on the job, but I sure wasn’t. Besides the laptop and company phone all employees were given when they were hired, the company decided to give us something else, as well. It was a small device, and I must confess I had no idea how that was supposed to help us organize our time better.

They showed us how to use it, and they told us it was necessary to note everything down in it, from contacts to appointments. For some, that was easy, but for me, it was a chore, at least until I understood how it worked. Everything seemed simple enough, from that point on. Because I had so many things to do each day, I sometimes forgot to charge it, but I was lucky to find a car charger for it.

That’s how I got my hp ipaq 211 handheld, the gadget that knows everything. Everything we do, I mean, as we have to keep it updated daily, so that the company could check the amount of work each of us does. Due to the HP PDA people started working extra hard. I have always worked really hard, so nothing has changed in my daily schedule.

Actually, this PDA has changed something. My bosses took notice of the hard work I have always done for the company, so I got a promotion. That was something I owe to my iPAQ, just as my new car is owed to it, too.

Are Household Appliances Affected By A Hard Water Supply?

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

The majority of homes are fed with a domestic water supply which provides “hard water”. Hard water is simply a designation which is applied to water which has a relatively high level of dissolved minerals in it. The two most important minerals are calcium and magnesium. There is absolutely no health risk associated with hard water - but it can have an impact on both the efficiency and lifespan of domestic appliances.

As a consequence of hard water, mineral deposits can be laid down in water pipes and a range of household appliances. Household appliances which use hot or boiling water are especially at risk as heating the water frees the minerals it contains which then solidify as “scale”. Coffee makers, kettles, steam irons, dishwashers and washing machines are all prone to this effect - as are household central heating systems and boilers.

There are a number of different variables which influence how much scale is generated. The temperature of the water is one of the strongest influencing factors on this process. More scale is produced at higher temperatures. Running dishwashers and washing machines at a lower temperature setting will reduce the amount of scale produced and help to ensure that these appliances continue to operate efficiently and have an extended working life. Using soaps and detergents which have an anti-scaling agent included will also help.

Using a lower water temperature with appliances such as steam irons, kettles and coffee makers isn’t very practical. Some kettles come with filters built in these days, which can prevent or reduce the incursion of harmful minerals (as well as improving the taste of hot drinks). Some modern irons incorporate specially designed, removable scale traps which make it easy to wash away any scale under a running tap. Other alternatives include periodically cleaning your appliances with special anti-scale chemicals.

Whilst there is no danger to health as a result of hard water, some people may dislike the taste it results in for either hot drinks or boiled and steamed food. On the other hand, there are those who swear that hard water makes better tasting tea than soft water. It’s a matter of personal taste at the end of the day. If the flavour of your food and drinks isn’t satisfactory, you can always use a water filter. These range from very cheap (but effective) jug filters, to under sink or even whole house filters. These are cheaper than you may think and are really quite simple to install.

It may seem like an inconvenience, but it’s well worth the effort to counter the effects of a hard water supply. In addition to the improved operational efficiency of your domestic appliances, use of the correct detergents and the selection of a lower operating temperature, combined with scale removal from time to time, will save you money by extending the life of your appliances.

Cut out the drudgery of tedious ironing sessions with a Tefal steam generator iron - you’ll be amazed at how much time you can save.

“Why You Should Never Surrender To Fear And Never Accept And Embrace The Feeling.”

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Dealing with our fears in is something we have been doing for millions of years, it all came about from what is called our lizard brain … also known as the amygdala. This primeval brain stem is our lower brain, where basic emotions function from. Call it a memory bank for emotions … fear being one of them.

We all make quick decisions when cornered, some of these decisions are irrational and afterwards we wonder why we reacted the way we did! What made us do it, why did we have a panic attack and become feared in an irrational way? We use something that is called the ‘emotion of fear’. It is something that is stored within all of us. How do we overcome such irrational fear like public speaking for instance? We have to start by working on changing the stored emotions.

So when you are in a tight spot and take instant fight or flight action, it is the lizard brain which sits at the base of the skull that takes over. Evolutionists tell us that we’ve had this ‘lizard brain’ since we were, well, lizards. In the context of fear, the lizard brain’s reactions to everything are limited to: eating, attacking, running away and mating. That is why you sometimes make irrational judgments.

Accommodating these fear emotions is like feeding a hungry lion, it will only become hungry again and you have to go through the same cycle. So why not just rid yourself of these fear emotions for good, as that is the answer to the fix you require. You wouldn’t get out of your car when travelling around a wild animal park and embrace a wild lion, and that is how you have to see your fear. Do not embrace it as it will bite you nastily. Yet some therapists say you should embrace your fear! Well of course now you can see that this advice is very risky, as unsafe as asking you to embrace a wild lion! Why? Well because all what you are doing is storing that fear emotion within your lizard brain’s memory banks, and then it can be drawn on again and again to make you feel just as bad the next time you are confronted by what it is you are feared of. So do be warned.

Why is it dire to allow these fear memories into your life? To accept these negative thoughts reinforces the emotion of fear. Accepting the feeling can reinforce it even more at a later stage. Some therapists advise you to accept the feeling of fear so as to nurture your true self. This is unreliable as it causes more emotional memories to be stored in what is known as the lizard brain, and hence your fear is perpetuated.

These emotions of fear drawn from your memory bank actually feed the very fear you want to be rid of. It goes around in a vicious circle, a one that you just can’t seem to find an end to. Some therapists advise that you go into the fear and accept it for what it is! However, top self help author Stephen Richards says, “By embracing the very fear you want to rid yourself from you are reinforcing the emotional memory of that particular fear. Frankly you need to ground yourself and transmute this fear into something else. By maintaining your relationship with the fear emotion you are inviting it to remain within your life.”

When we freeze with fear it is something that has been brought on by over activity of the amygdala … the lizard brain. When signals from the body are misread by the amygdala it can cause out of place actions. If only you could have stopped that emotion of fear being stored in the first place then you would have been able to prevent it kicking in again at a later date. So we have to get in there and stabilise everything and clear out those memory banks before it gets too big to handle and becomes even more debilitating than it already is.

Top of the list when it comes to fear is speaking in public or at meetings. Second on the list is asking someone for something, perhaps asking someone out on a date that you have taking a liking to. The fear of looking a nerd and being told “no” is the stumbling block. This is fear of rejection. What makes you freeze when fear comes on? Easy! It is caused by the overreaction of your reptilian brain, the amygdala! This then stores the emotions of fear, but it can act in a way that causes you to act unreasonably … like running off, finding it difficult to breath or even fainting and so on! To correct this is quite easy; it just means resetting the memory of fear within you.

When you are focused on an impending situation you have wrongly construed as ‘dangerous’, like public speaking or going on an aeroplane when you are feared of flying, the body undergoes many changes that prepare it for intense action, albeit this is a falsely activated call to arms. This brings on symptoms like: difficulty in breathing, increased body temperature, localised sweating, decreased motility of the stomach, constrictions in the stomach and intestines, as well as making your hair stand on end.

Once the floodgates of fear are opened it is a tough job to get them to close. What we need is a way to stop the false fear response. Many therapies are listed as a means to resolving this, but some are a little extreme. Immersion therapy whereby you are confronted by the very thing that sets off the fear is quite forthright in what it does! Of course it’s not a very nice or acceptable way to go about fixing fear! Then there is cognitive therapy, slowly exposing you to the trigger of your fear! But what if there was a way that you didn’t even need to confront your fears?

Why are there so many self help books and why do they all read the same? Surely they can’t all be telling you the same thing about overcoming fear? What if only one of these was right for you, which one out of the hundreds of thousands out there would it be? Well to save you the search and to give you something more direct than just a book, there is something far more potent than taking pot luck with a book that may not fit your needs.

After quite a few years of research and development now there is something that substantially instils positive emotion within you. It’s not hypnosis or even subliminal messaging … they are a little old hat and long in the tooth now. International self help guru Stephen Richards has designed an extremely effective tool that will fix it for you to start overcoming irrational fear within less than 30 minutes! The barrier to rational thought is lifted; there are no more uncertain situations and a more positive outlook can now be instilled.

Technology since the days of hypnotherapy has moved on, now there is a far quicker way to channel new thought processes into the mind and to empty that emotion memory bank which is full to the brink with fear memories. This is where you can move things up a gear and integrate the fix into your busy lifestyle without hours and hours of costly therapy.

There must be 1001 ways to overcome irrational fear, but none so fast as this method. This method overcomes the need for frequent visits to your hypnotherapist, and of course saving you the immense cost too. The specially made CD by Stephen Richards zones in to the heart of the problem, and the best part is you can hear every word being spoken. What would have been thought impossible ten years ago is now reality. In less than 30 minutes the primary track on the CD targets the area in need of help, simple as that.

This remarkable up to date method designed by Stephen Richards used in the “Releasing You From Fear CD” is unique because it targets the zone of the amygdala. It totally disarms the harboured memories of the specific fear emotion that is causing you distress. Methods previously used to target this area did not take into account the fear emotion and how your lizard brain reacted in certain trigger situations. Minor obstacles and irritations which were once magnified and a cause of the cycle of fear can now be fixed.

Banish unexplained fears today when you use the soothing audio CD by self-help guru Stephen Richards. Find out more from his site. This article, “Why You Should Never Surrender To Fear And Never Accept And Embrace The Feeling.” is available for free reprint.
