Now it is time to prioritise your tasks in order of importance. If you have anything to do that is time sensitive this should go to the top of the list. Anything else can be fitted in later on. As soon as you have created your priority list you will need to plan out when you can complete each tasks. Think about your normal routine and fit in tasks around your usual daily activities. It is at this point where most people realize that they can get more done than they actually think. Think about your day in 30 minute slots and plan your time appropriately. Don’t leave long tasks until the end of the day as you will probably not be too motivated to do them.

Next think about whether or not you could successfully delegate any tasks to other people. This can be easier for work related tasks, especially if you have staff who work under you. Being able to delegate tasks can make all the difference to your time management, so think about if this can be done.

It is also wise to ensure that you are allowing yourself the right amount of time to get things done. Don’t give yourself an hour to complete a 3 hour task - this is not good management of time. Instead think in practical terms of how long certain things will take and plan accordingly. Try to give yourself more time than you need at first and you will benefit from this.

During the first week or two you might not feel as though you are really getting anywhere. If this is the case do not worry. It can take time to really get to grips with a new routine, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Stick to your plan and you will soon find that things become a lot easier. Tasks will be completed on time and you are not worrying about things you need to get done.

Although it’s not something that I’m proud of, I have vast experience in leaving studying for my exams until the last minute. I have a few tips to stop you doing the same.

Positive mental attitude, or PMA, is the place to start. You need to relax and not stress out over the forthcoming exam. The worst that can happen is that you fail, this isn’t a national incident. Chill out and you’ll find studying a lot easier.

Ok, so the worst thing happens and you get an F. Look at this positively, if you get the bottom grade you can only get better! Seriously, put into perspective, once you’ve hit the bottom the only way is up, so take steps not to be in the situation of cramming at the last minute again.

So now that you’ve accepted the worst possible scenario, take a deep breathe and do your best. You can’t be condemned for failing if you have tried, and resolve to do better the next time.

In effect, you are really going to get up your classmates noses by getting really good grades and not doing the enormous amount of study time which they have to put in.

Now I’m going to tell you how I studied at the last minute and still achieved high grades. This method can deviate slightly depending upon the subject, but the theory is the same. You need to break down the subject matter into smaller chunks that are easier to absorb. Get into the underlying concepts of each small chunk and when you put the chunks together you will know the answers.

By only learning one section at a time and its underlying concept, you are taking in the valuable information piece by piece, until you have the whole jigsaw.

You have added valuable layers of knowledge to what you had previously, so if you were expecting an F, you will more than likely now achieve at least a D.
