Second Daughter Issue: Not Much Of A Health Problem
Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010Your elder child takes the praise from everyone while your younger child is famous for his mischievous or impolite attitude. The huge difference between their personalities, in spite of living in the same environment and having the same upbringing, makes you wonder what went wrong the second time.
This difference worries the parents a lot and they try to eliminate the entire factor that may be a cause of this pessimistic attitude. Every parent wants best for his children and even if the child is not scoring well, parents do love him but a little less than the successful one and this attitude of parents becomes a problem.
It is not a disease but it is pattern of behaviors, the second child usually adopts in reaction to his environment. Alfred Adler who was the victim of such behavior himself introduced this famous concept.
Second-child syndrome was a concept that was first introduced by Alfred Adler who belonged to the school of psychoanalysis and was greatly influenced by Freud initially. Later on, he did object to some of the approaches of Freud and enter into a feud with him.
That is why the second child develops the feeling of loneliness and tries to indulge in behavior, which can get him the attention of his parents even if it will result in punishment. Sometimes they talk back rudely, do not follow the rules of the house, fail at school papers etc. but in fact, all they are looking for is little attention.
Very few children are strong enough to fight back these circumstances and they succeed to achieve the desired attention by getting good grades, showing best attitude, helping the mother in house chores, among others.
Nevertheless, all children are not same so parents should avoid the comparison between their children and should try to provide them equal affection and attention.
